Abelisaurus was found in 1985 by paleontologists Jose Bonaparte and Fernando Novas in Argentina. Abelisaurus was a new dinosaur that warranted a newly found family genus. This group was named Abelisauridae and continues to add new more oddly shaped theropods. Only a few pieces from the skull have ever been found. However, these few fragments were enough to distinguish the predator as a completely new genus.
