Coelophysis was found in 1889 by paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope. Fossils of adult Coelophysis have been found with young juveniles fossilized inside the stomach. The level of growth at which the juvenile was suggests that it had been eaten therefore giving the impression that Coelophysis was cannibalistic. In 1947, in Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, a large 'graveyard' of coelophysis fossils were found and gave light into this dinosaur's biology.
